The Canadian Landmine Foundation has been working with the Canadian Association of Veterans in UN Peacekeeping (www.cavunp.org) for several years to have August 9th as "Peacekeepers Day".

August 9th is the date in 1974 when 9 Canadian Peacekeepers were killed when their plane was shot down over Syria. Peacekeepers Day also recognises the countless Canadians who have served, or are serving, as Blue Berets and in other NATO and coalition missions. Historical references from CBC.ca

On Peacekeepers Day, learn more about the role Canadians have played in the pursuit of Peace and celebrate our history with peacekeepers and veterans. In your community encourage, and participate in, recognition of their service and sacrifice.

Humanitarian mine action is an act of peacemaking -
salute our peacekeepers through mine action.
This summer, invite your friends or co-workers to join you for lunch and, instead of asking them to bring something for the meal, invite them to help bring peace to some of the most disenfranchised people in the world, by donating to The Canadian Landmine Foundation. It is amazing how small amounts from each person can multiply! We invite participation any time during the summer but particularly on August 9th in celebration of Peacekeepers Day.
