PLAN OTTAWA TREATY
CAMPAIGN EVENTS
(P.S. Make sure you have the schools permission before undertaking
any activities)
|
| School Announcements |
Encourage your school to mark Ottawa Treaty Day
with a morning announcement to the school. A Mats Sundin greeting
can be found here.
Or perhaps something like " December 3rd is the anniversary
of the Ottawa Treaty banning the production, use and trade of anti-personnel
landmines. Canada played a key role in this treaty, named after
our Capital, that makes life better for millions of people around
the world."
|
| Put a Cap on Landmines |
Inspired by the suggestion of the students at Sir
William Mulock Secondary School in Newmarket, Ontario, Put a Cap
on Landmines involves bringing a toonie to school to put toward
a donation for landmine action, in exchange for the authorization
to wear a cap at school for the day. ~ $2 clears approximately 1
square meter of minefield. ~
|
| Country themes |
Bring in news stories, books, movies, food, clothes,
history, etc. about and from one of the Adopt-A-Minefield countries:
Afghanistan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mozambique, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina,
thus combining education with entertainment.
|
| Loonie Landmine
Action |
Every single dollar donated makes a difference!
100% of ALL donations received are put directly toward landmine
action. ~ There are an estimated 5.5 million students in Canada.
If each student donated one dollar nearly 2.5 million square meters
of minefield could be cleared!! That's 2 ½ times the size
of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada's largest city in terms of area!! ~
|
| Run a poster competition |
Host an Art Exhibit in your school or community
displaying works of art created by students and local youth in order
to raise awareness of the landmine issue. You can also ask for donations
to be put toward landmine action.
|
| Take a Slice out
of Landmines |
Encourage your teachers, student council or classmates
to organize a pizza lunch day and put the proceeds from the sale
of the pizza toward landmine removal efforts. Call a local pizza
place and explain what you are attempting to do, maybe they will
sponsor the event by donating the pizza!
|
| Ask local stores
to support your activities |
Offer to dress window displays in stores with posters
and sculptures you have created to increase landmine awareness in
your community. Perhaps the store would collect money to help support
mine action work..
|
|
Prepare a role-play
or drama
|
Prepare a landmine production on how landmines affect
people's lives. Perform to the class, the entire school, parents
or members of the community! Get them to bring a donation or use
ticket sales to make a donation while raising awareness of the landmine
issue. To
view our landmine play And Then Everything Changed click
here.
|
| Organize-a-thon |
Organize a Dance-a-thon, Swim-a-thon, or any other
type of
-a-thon. Run a sponsored walk, swim, silence, dance-a-thon
or another type of activity to raise funds for Survivor Assistance
programs.
|
| Community
Arts and Crafts Sale |
Ask for donations of arts and crafts from students,
teachers or throughout your local community and sell them at an
event to raise money for landmine action. You might also try a silent
auction.
|
| Snack tables |
Bake sales are always popular and you could also
set up a mock minefield that students must walk through to get to
the food tables, thus raising awareness and funds for landmine action.
|
| Participate in
a marathon |
Get sponsored to participate in any type of marathon
across Canada and donate the proceeds toward survivor assistance.
|
|
Stick your foot
on the wall
|
Everyone stands on a piece of paper and draws around
one of their feet, cuts it out and colors it or writes anti-landmine
messages on it (one third of all mine victims are children - many
of them lose a limb in landmine explosions). These feet could be
stuck to the walls all around the school or in the community. You
can also have your feet sponsored by a local organization or business
and put the donations toward mine action projects.
|
| Spread the word |
Send emails to your friends and tell them about
the landmine issue. Refer them to www.clmf.org.
